Brain Tumors

Treating Brain Tumors with CyberKnife

CyberKnife robotic stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) painlessly delivers highly precise beams of high-dose radiation to brain tumors and lesions, without incisions, hospitalization, or long recovery time. CyberKnife SRS is an alternative to brain tumor surgery and can be used for brain tumors that are considered inoperable because of their location in the head, for those patients who cannot undergo brain cancer surgery due to their poor medical condition, or who refuse surgery and can be treated very effectively and safely with radiation.

It is a non-invasive procedure where you simply lie on a treatment table while the CyberKnife gently moves around your head from multiple directions to deliver the very controlled dose of radiation. The CyberKnife has a linear accelerator, mounted on a robotic arm that delivers high doses of radiation with sub-millimeter accuracy within the brain, drastically reducing possible damage to healthy brain tissue.

With CyberKnife, the entire treatments can be delivered in 3–5 days, further lowering the risk of complication, especially near the eyes, and speech and other vital centers. If you compare the costs of CyberKnife treatment worldwide and even in India you will find us most cost effective.

Condition usually treated are:

  • Metastatic brain tumors
  • Base-of-skull tumors
  • Meningiomas
  • Acoustic neuromas
  • Schwannomas
  • Certain gliomas
  • Pituitary tumors
  • Craniopharyngiomas
  • AV malformations
  • Trigeminal neuralgia
  • Recurrent Glioblastoma

How does CyberKnife treat brain tumors?

The CyberKnife SRS system improves on other radiosurgery techniques by eliminating the need for a fixed metal head frame attached with screws to the patient’s head. A mesh mask is worn during treatment instead. The highly maneuverable, precise delivery system enables doctors to achieve an exceptional level of accuracy in a non-invasive manner. CyberKnife is an outpatient treatment performed in one to five treatment visits with minimal to no side effects. During the CyberKnife treatment, hundreds of highly concentrated and incredibly precise beams of radiation are targeted directly to tumors and lesions in the brain. Patients dress comfortably in their own clothes and, depending on the treatment center, they can bring music to listen to during the treatment.

How CyberKnife is different from Gamma Knife:

Unlike Gammaknife, Cyberknife treatment doesn't require rigid, invasive frame for immobilization and is entirely a painless out patient procedure. Additional advantage is that we can fractionate treatments and there is real-time imaging every 5 seconds throughout the treatment.

With CyberKnife, the range of tumors treatable with stereotactic Radiosurgical ablation has increased, and now includes, among other ailments, extra-cranial lesions. Clinical indications include:

CyberKnife offers superior conformance to tumor shape, which is important for future treatment for recurrence. CyberKnife can also irradiate the tumor bed to delay recurrence.
