Apollo Proton Cancer Centre (APCC), Chennai

Apollo Proton Cancer Centre is India’s first and South Asia’s first proton therapy facility, established in 2019. Located at 4/661, Dr. Vikram Sarabai Instronic Estate, 7th Street, Tharamani, Chennai, Tamil Nadu 600096, this 150-bed integrated cancer hospital has been a pioneer in bringing proton therapy to the region.

The center has achieved significant milestones, treating over 2,500 patients from 147 countries. It features a cutting-edge multi-room Proton Centre equipped with state-of-the-art technology, offering comprehensive cancer care that integrates surgical, radiation, and medical oncology. The facility is JCI accredited and operates as part of the Apollo Hospitals Group, one of Asia’s largest healthcare providers.

2. Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) – ACTREC, Navi Mumbai

The Tata Memorial Centre’s National Hadron Beam Therapy Facility at Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC) in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 11, 2023, and began treating patients on August 15, 2023.

This is India’s first public sector proton therapy facility. The center features three treatment rooms, each equipped with 360-degree rotation gantries and the latest Pencil Beam Scanning (PBS) technology capable of delivering Intensity Modulated Proton Therapy (IMPT). As of August 2025, the facility had treated 541 patients, with 60% receiving free treatment and the remaining 40% receiving care at subsidized rates (approximately one-third of the ₹20-30 lakh cost in the private sector).

Upcoming Proton Therapy Centers (Under Development)

AI generated representation image of Proton Therapy Machine

3. AIG Hospitals, Hyderabad

AIG Hospitals announced in January 2025 an investment of ₹800 crore to establish India’s third proton therapy center and the first in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The hospital has signed an agreement with Belgium-based IBA to acquire the Proteus®ONE Proton Therapy System with DynamicARC technology, which will be the first of its kind in Southeast Asia.

This system will be integrated into a new 300-bed dedicated Oncology Centre currently under construction at the Gachibowli campus in Hyderabad. While the exact timeline has not been publicly specified, the facility is expected to be operational in the coming years.

4. Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad (Jubilee Hills)

In March 2025, Apollo Hospitals announced plans to invest ₹250 crore to establish India’s first Proteus One proton therapy system at its Jubilee Hills campus in Hyderabad. This will be Apollo’s second proton therapy installation in India, featuring a 70-bed dedicated cancer centre.

The facility is expected to be operational by FY2028 and will have the capacity to treat an additional 350 patients annually. The investment will be funded through internal accruals.

5. Apollo Hospitals, Gurugram

Apollo Hospitals has also announced plans to establish a 100-bed Comprehensive Oncology Centre in Gurugram, which will integrate next-generation Proton Therapy System. This center will form part of Phase 2 expansion of Apollo’s upcoming 500-bed hospital in Gurugram.

The Phase 1 development is scheduled to be commissioned by Q4 FY25 / Q1 FY26, with the Proton and Integrated Cancer Centre targeted for completion over the next four years. This will be Apollo’s third Proton Therapy installation in India.

Important Clarifications

While various online sources list numerous hospitals as offering “proton therapy,” most of these facilities provide advanced radiation therapy techniques such as IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy), VMAT (Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy), SBRT (Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy), and brachytherapy, but not actual proton beam therapy.

Hospitals frequently mentioned in online listings but not currently offering proton therapy include:

Max Healthcare hospitals (Saket, Delhi and other locations)

Medanta – The Medicity, Gurugram

Fortis hospitals (various locations)

BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi

HCG Cancer Centres (various locations)

Manipal Hospitals (various locations)

Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi

Kokilaben Hospital, Mumbai

Other major cancer centers across India

These institutions offer world-class cancer care with advanced radiation oncology services, but proton beam therapy requires specialized, extremely expensive infrastructure (cyclotrons or synchrotrons) that only the two operational centers currently possess in India.

Cost and Accessibility

Proton therapy in India costs significantly less than international standards. At Apollo Proton Cancer Centre in Chennai, treatment costs range from ₹10-30 lakh per course. At Tata Memorial Centre’s ACTREC facility, 60% of patients receive treatment completely free, while the remaining 40% pay approximately ₹10 lakh, which is about one-third of private sector costs. This compares favorably to costs of $150,000-250,000 (₹1-1.5 crore) in the United States.

Future Outlook

India is poised for significant expansion in proton therapy capabilities over the next 3-5 years, with three additional centers under development that will bring the total to five operational facilities by 2028. This expansion will significantly improve access to this advanced cancer treatment technology, particularly in regions like Hyderabad and Gurugram that currently lack such facilities.

<hr
